"Girl" by David Thomas

"Girl" by David Thomas (Penguin Books, 1995. ISBN 0-45-118421-1) Amazon

I first read this book several years ago and have read it many times since, and when my original copy was lost I replaced it.

The plot involves a young man, Bradley Barrett, who goes into hospital to have his wisdom teeth removed and, after a mix up with the trolleys, is given the sex change that another patient was expecting. Unsurprisingly he is a bit perturbed when he wakes to be faced by an angry transsexual, with a swollen face following dental surgery, screaming "You've got my tits" at him.

It is a story that runs through the emotions, often very funny, but frequently sad. I would wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone with in interest in transgender fiction and indeed to anyone in search of a good read. Sadly out of print for a long while, but can be found secondhand.
